Intermodal transport on Trans-Eurasian corridors has become a fascinating alternative to ocean freight. In recent years, the New Silk Road has undergone significant changes driven by geopolitics and macroeconomic factors. New corridors are developing, such as the Trans-Caspian Route, the Europe – Turkey – Central Asia corridor, and the India – Europe corridor. During the debate, we will consider how intermodal corridors between Europe and Asia function today and what is the importance of Małaszewicze and other Polish rail border crossings on the New Silk Road.

Polish seaports are building their position within intermodal supply chains in Europe. The investments made in recent years at the ports of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Szczecin, and Świnoujście as well as the modernisation of Poland’s transport infrastructure have spurred the development of a modern logistics industry. Further ambitious projects are planned for the coming years, both in the three main ports and in smaller ones like Police and Elbląg, and the ambition of the port authorities is to expand their support base to neighbouring countries. During the debate, we will consider the future of the maritime industry in Poland and the region and its cooperation with the logistics sector.

Over the past several years, a network of regular intermodal connections between Europe and China has developed, providing an alternative to ocean shipping. Trans-Eurasian rail routes connect Europe not only with China but also with other countries that could be attractive destinations for intermodal services. In recent years, connections have been launched with countries such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. In February of the current year, the US and Israel launched a military intervention against Iran, which retaliated by blocking the Strait of Hormuz – one of the world’s most important energy logistics passages. The consequences of this military conflict spread worldwide, causing an energy crisis and disruptions to ocean shipping. This complicated the functioning of supply chains, which were already strained by the effects of the Russia – Ukraine war and other geopolitical tensions. During the debate, we will consider how the logistics and transportation industry can respond to this crisis and what lessons can be learned for the future.

The Polish road transport industry has experienced dynamic growth since 2015 and has become one of the strongest in Europe. In recent years, however, road carriers have faced new challenges, including rising costs, competition from foreign companies, new regulations such as the Mobility Package, the reintroduction of border controls with Germany, and the Green Deal policy. A significant factor influencing the operations of road carriers is the development of intermodal transport, which is forcing changes in the organisation of companies’ operations. The European Parliament and the European Council have been working in recent years on legislative proposals aimed at stimulating environmentally friendly changes in freight transport. One of these legislative proposals is the Capacity Management Directive, which, alongside the construction of the TEN-T network, is intended to lead to the creation of a Single European Railway Area. During the debate, we will consider how the rail and intermodal transport industry assesses the legislative work and infrastructure integration within the TEN-T network.
